Volunteering Opportunities

As a small, local voluntary organisation we rely heavily on volunteers in all aspects of the organisation – from service delivery to the Board of Trustees. All volunteers involved in service delivery are required to attend our Volunteer’s Training Course before starting work with us and Board members are expected to attend the course as soon as they can.
Women from under represented groups are encouraged to apply.

Here are a few volunteer roles we are looking to fill. Please understand that all positions will be vetted with appropriate references taken up. An enhanced DBS check is also required.

  • Health & Safety Volunteer to conduct a weekly or monthly audit
  • Security advisor (Premises and digital)
  • Live chat Helpline volunteer (office hours)
  • Peer mentors
  • Financial assistant for housing benefit and/or bookkeeping (Quickbooks)
  • Policy & Procedures author
  • Legal and financial advisors
  • Counsellors (mental health & anxiety)
  • Multi lingual translators
  • Nutritionist and someone/team to plan and coordinate a weekly “Global” celebration of different foods and cultures from around the world including an educational element (quiz or music for Mums and children). Monthly theme with the kitchen/dining area decorated with the help of the Mum’s and children.
  • Clothing and stores coordinator willing and able to secure gifts in kind such as specific clothing for a family coming into refuge and preparation of welcome packs and weekly food shopping and Menu planning
  • Child support workers with experience
  • Painting and decorating
  • Drama and/or music teacher
  • Data Analyst with output and measures reporting
  • Grant writer (including statutory bids)
  • Fundraisers (Community, Corporate, & Challenge events))
  • Rental van companies with drivers

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees are responsible for strategic management of the Refuge organisation. A full Board meeting is held every six weeks with sub-group meetings held in between. The Board is made up of local women who volunteer their time and expertise in order to shape the destiny of the Refuge Organisation, safeguard its interests and ensure its financial stability.

We are in particular need of women with either a background in finance, skills in fundraising, risk management or employment law.

Service Delivery
Volunteers work alongside paid staff in all aspects of service delivery e.g.:

  • working with the children
  • assisting at the Outreach drop-in
  • working in the office
  • working in the house or the garden
  • planning and delivering cooking lessons

After attending the training course, new volunteers are not expected to offer more than two hours a week for the first three months of working with us.

Appointment is conditional on having an Enhanced Disclosure Certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service that is acceptable to the Refuge. We will help you to provide this if you don’t have one.
