The ideal candidate would be a strong bid writer with experience in raising funds through grants and trusts and statutory funding.

The Community Fundraising Manager and Chief Operating Officer plays a dual role, responsible for developing community-based fundraising initiatives and overseeing the operational functions of WHWR.  This dynamic position requires strong leadership, strategic vision, and operational efficiency, with a focus on fostering community engagement and supporting the organisation’s mission.

Our Mission

Welwyn Hatfield Women’s Refuge and Support Services (WHWR) seeks to work towards an end to violence against women and children in the home and outside. Towards this ultimate end we seek to meet the following objectives:

  • To provide safe temporary accommodation, advice, support and information to women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse.
  • To offer specific services for children.
  • To refer to County Outreach support organisations for women who choose not to use the Refuge for temporary accommodation and to ex resident women and children.
  • To offer emotional support to women who have experienced violence and abuse.
  • To plan and facilitate Domestic Violence Awareness and Good Practice training to external agencies.
  • Multi-agency work and networking.
  • Advocacy

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy Development: Design and implement a community fundraising strategy aligned with the organisation’s goals.
Campaign Management: Plan, organise, and manage community fundraising events and campaigns, ensuring they are cost-effective and successful.
Relationship Building: Cultivate and maintain relationships with community groups, local businesses, and volunteers to enhance fundraising efforts.
Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and manage a team of volunteers to support fundraising activities.
Outreach and Promotion: Develop marketing and communication plans to promote fundraising initiatives through various channels, including social media, local press, and community networks.
Monitoring and Reporting: Track and report on fundraising progress, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
Budget Management: Prepare and manage budgets for community fundraising activities, ensuring adherence to financial targets.
Compliance: Ensure all fundraising activities comply with legal standards and ethical fundraising practices.
Operational Oversight: Lead the development and implementation of operational strategies and improvements, ensuring efficient service delivery.
Team Development: Recruit, lead, and mentor staff, fostering a culture of high performance and collaboration.
Partnerships and Networking: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including partners, donors, and regulatory bodies.
Representation: Act as a spokesperson and representative for the organisation in public forums, meetings, and events as needed.
Board Support: Provide support and counsel to the Board on major decisions, initiatives, and strategic challenges.
Culture and Improvement: Promote a culture of continuous improvement and strong client focus, maintaining a positive and supportive atmosphere within WHWR.
Operations Management:  Cover the duties of the Operations Manager role where necessary.
Board Engagement: Attend, participate in, and contribute to Board meetings and Strategy Days.

Qualifications:

  • Qualification in Marketing, Communications, Non-profit Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Proven track record in community fundraising, event management, or a similar role associated with operational oversight.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with financial management and operational oversight.
  • Proficiency with fundraising software (e.g., Raiser’s Edge) is desirable.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for events.

This role specification puts equal emphasis on both community fundraising and operational management, reflecting the dual responsibilities of the position. Adjustments can be made to better fit the specific needs of WHWR.
Due to the sensitive nature of WHWR’s work, providing intimate support to female survivors of abuse, this position is open to women applicants only (exemption under the Equality Act 2010, which permits such a restriction where privacy and decency are genuine occupational requirements).
